Eating healthy food combined with taking proper exercise can give you the body that you’ve always wanted along with strengthening your immune system to increase your resistance to illness.
There are a great deal of benefits of healthy eating that we already know about & there may be many more yet to be discovered.
Our aim is to provide you with no-nonsense suggestions on how you can easily incorporate healthy eating choices into your lifestyle whatever your circumstances.
We know that it’s not always easy with the busy lives that we all lead these days, especially if you are trying to please everyone in the family.
Find The Right Healthy Diet For You
No two people are exactly the same & that goes for our dietary requirements too. An office worker with a sedentary job is likely to burn up less calories than a farmer who spends long hours doing physical work. A young athlete who runs every day will need more than someone who is retired & just plays the odd round of golf. However, we all need the essential nutrients that are found in a balanced diet.
A healthy diet is definitely not about making yourself miserable by denying yourself all the foods that you love, it’s about making conscious choices & eating a wide variety of mouth-watering foods.
Healthy eating starts with you in the home whether you are a Mom in a family situation or a single person living on your own. Your habits good or bad affect not only yourself but your whole family. In a family situation you are making the food choices for all of the members in your household. If you choose takeaways, fast foods that are high in fat and other convenience foods daily you are not teaching the family about healthy eating habits and could be ingraining these bad habits early in their lives condemning them to a life of obesity and other health related problems associated with being overweight.
If you are single and living on your own, too often it is the easy way option to order in pizza or have just toast for your dinner. These meals are fine for once a week but if you are going to base your diet on them solely on a daily basis you are not fuelling your body with the correct nutrients and could tend to become overweight, listless and have no energy to even go for a walk let alone to have enough staying power to concentrate on studies.
In order to guide people in selecting healthy food items, the US Department of Agriculture has designed the food pyramid. It is labeled to illustrate a pyramid, which demonstrates the food type groups that are essential in both the quantity in which a normal individual requires each of these foods.
The base of the food pyramid are such foods that serve as ready source of energy. As these are rich in starch, low in fat, and include cereals, pasta, bread, and a variety of different types of grains. Explaining the food pyramid further a normal adult individual needs 6 to 11 servings of these items daily. Whole grains are the best and healthiest food of this group. In a single serving of these foods you can include a slice of bread, a cup of cereal flakes, one flat tortilla, and one ounce of rice or pasta.
Looking closer at the food group pyramid it shows, vegetables and fruits are required in less quantity than carbohydrates. It is suggested that a grown person would need 3 to 5 servings of vegetables and 2 to 4 servings of fruits each day. With the high fiber content of vegetables and fruits make them an ideal food items as fiber helps the bowel movements regular. Additionally they are both rich in vitamins which is a requirement for immunity and minerals, which ensure the proper functioning of various body organs. A healthy tip among vegetables is to go for dark leafy green vegetables and stay with fresh fruits.
Going up to the next upper chamber in the food pyramid is occupied by proteins and dairy products. A suggestion is that you will need 2 – 3 servings daily of each of these foods. As protein comes from lean meat, eggs, fish, beans, and nuts it’s advisable to remove the visible fat on the meat in order to make it a low fat item. Go easy with the use of nuts since they tend to also hold fats. Dairy products such as milk are the complete diet with most of the required vitamins and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Cheese and yogurt are also recommended dairy foods. While on the other hand try to abstain from high intake of both ice cream and cheese as they contain a high level of fat.
At the top of the food pyramid lies fats, including oils, and sweets. The recommended quantity of these items is limited to sparing use. Butter, cream, oils, lollies, margarines are all foods that are not easy to digest and hence should be used in minimal amounts. However saying that it is an important part of our diet, just as all the other parts of the food pyramid are important as well.
What are some of the things I can eat? There are a lot of healthy eating recipes out at the moment that cover healthy eating fruit and vegetables, healthy eating cooking and healthy vegetarian eating. There are a great many books written about a healthy living diet but I think it is important to know that all food types are fine if only eaten as a treat and not part of a staple diet that you eat daily. Take it from me you will feel better if you eat right as eating right has a lot to do with how we feel. For instance if we lack nutrients, it can make you feel depressed and ill.
